Do the Right Thing by Rajiv 'Ranjan'

Do the right thing

Sweet childhood memories I have

Of my father say, "do the right thing"

"What's the right thing?" I asked

He taught me manners and behaviour

Quoted the scriptures as our saviour

"Doing the right thing" weighed heavier

The more I tried to live the prescriptions

The more confused I got with the right thing

Heard a lot about our dharma in life

Mutually conflicting they oft created strife

Confusion in my mind still remained rife

What's the right thing? I always asked

For our country, a constitution we created

A common dream for our nation we initiated

Amendments we made as we tread

Vote banks were made, havoc we spread

We traded charges "I am right you are wrong"

We argue and repeat, like a burden of a song

Don't mess with our democratic institution

"Do the right thing", follow the constitution

Constitution envisioned social equality

Preferential implementations led to duality

We dreamt to create an egalitarian society

One that was, based on social homogeneity

Strife and conflicts were bound to happen

Navigating choppy seas was for the captain

Blame game, rights and wrongs flew thick

"Constitution is the right thing", still will stick

Our constitution envisaged economic equity

Poor and hungry faces, are all there to pity

Rich got richer and poor had no hopes

All in power profited and left no scopes

Promises of roti, kapada, makan they got

Hollow as the promise, misery it wrought

"What is the right thing?" I asked again

Constitution is the right thing", to begin

Equidistant, is constitution from all religions

Religion has become mother of all divisions

A strictly private affair of our personal life

Is writ large on public spaces, creating strife

Noisy and vocal it has come to become

Taking spirituality out of its main outcome

"What is the right thing", let us decide

Constitution is "the right thing" let us abide
